Three year 11 pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn are set to compete at the First Lego League World Festival in St. Louis, USA, after becoming the highest placed Welsh team at a UK and Ireland league competition.

Ben Dodd, Edward Upton and Joseph Stadius attended the First Lego League UK and Ireland finals over half term and competed against 47 other teams in order to try and win the overall title.

They had previously won the regional South Wales final.

It was a day of competition with three rounds of the robot game.

Several interviews were held where they discussed their robot design, their project and core values.

The pupils had invested hours into developing their robot and features which would allow them to complete different tasks to try and get the highest possible score.

Their team work was being assessed throughout the day.

The project they had developed which allowed a pet owner to monitor their pet when they were not at home was also discussed.

During the competition Ben, Edward and Joseph won the Robot design, and as the highest placed Welsh team, they have been invited to attend The First Lego League World Festival in St. Louis, USA, at the end of April.

Headteacher Hugh Thomas said: “as a whole a school and as a community we are extremely proud of the team’s achievements.  This is the culmination of a lot of hard work by the boys and Mrs Sarah Thomas their teacher.  It shows that with hard work great things can be achieved.  We wish them every success in America.”
